For my whole life I have lived in Saltaire and I feel lucky because of that. It is a calm, peaceful village but it still has most of the necessities you would expect from a village. Good examples of these are the local shops. There are lots of different shops ranging from Bakeries to a Post Office and even a green grocer that sells delicious fresh fruit and vegetables. However recently I have noticed there has been an increase in independent shops closing down. Three have closed down in Saltaire in the past year, two of them closing down within the last two months!
It is not surprising, given that according to the headline of The Guardian on the 24th October 2016, “Britain’s high streets under strain as 15 shops close every day.”
According to The Guardian, “Fashion shops are struggling, with 206 closing in the first half of the year and only 119 opening, leading to a net decline of 87.” This article, written in late 2016, shows us that this downward trend shows no sign of reversing. The retail gazette confirms this, “2017 could see more indie retail stores opening than closing.”
It is frustrating for me as it is easy to see how this could be stopped. All we need to do is shop local more.
