Torland of Ilkley’s Monica’s Strength and Rehab tells us three reasons why having an active lifestyle is good for you …
So number one – the most obvious…It improves physical health!
It is common knowledge that leading an active lifestyle that incorporates regular exercise has a positive effect on your physical health. There are a wide range of potential benefits, including:
- Improving the cardiovascular system – heart and lungs
- Increasing strength
- Improving mobility and joint stiffness
- Making it easier to maintain a healthy weight (alongside good nutrition)
- Keeping blood pressure and cholesterol at a healthy level
It helps your mental health and wellbeing
Awareness of mental health is continuing to grow, with increasing coverage in the news more people than ever recognise the importance of mental health to wellbeing. The endorphins released during exercise can have a positive effect, and there are many stories you can find on the web where people have successfully used exercise to improve their mental health.
It makes you friends and gets you socialising
For some, training alone is an opportunity to get away from it all. For others, like me, the social aspect is what keeps them motivated and committed to their exercise regime even on the dark mornings and evenings in winter when it’s all too easy to relax on the sofa instead! Exercising as part of group can be a great way to make new friends with like minded people, who can support you in achieving your goals. The first step is the hardest, but being part of a group can make it easier.
Whatever age you are and whatever type of exercise you prefer I would highly encourage you to find something you enjoy and do it on a regular basis. The benefits are clear, so do something today, your body and mind will thank you for it!
